Reader’s Theater presents “Mother Courage”

Come join in the audience as the Readers’ Theater small group of the First United Methodist Church presents for you a shortened adaptation of the play, “Mother Courage” at 7:00 pm Friday, May 11 in the sanctuary.

Originally written in 1939, Mother Courage is considered by some to be the greatest anti-war play of all time. The story tracks Mother Courage and her children through 12 years of the holy war during the early 17th century. The family follows the armies, pulling their heavy wagon and wares and trading with soldiers in an attempt to profit from the war. But with great profit comes great loss. See their heart-wrenching journey into the heart of war . . . and back.

The Importance of Being Earnest

On October 28th the Readers Theater Small Group of the First United Methodist Church will present Oscar Wilde’s play “The Importance of Being Earnest” at 7:00 pm.
The play originally opened in London on Valentine’s Day. A comedy, it is a sharp commentary on upper class British society, of which Wilde himself was a member. Here he criticizes (satirizes or mocks) the institution of marriage, as well as love, for its emphasis on appearance instead of substance.
Although we may think we are more enlightened than the upper class Victorians who worked hard to maintain an appearance of propriety and morality, yet lived quite otherwise behind closed doors, we today are no strangers to the knowledge that many we esteem for their “high position” kn public life actually lead secret and not always savory lives that bear scrutiny. All of us, in fact, who are active in the social media (Facebook, blogs, Twitter) know what it is to forge an identity based on appearance and style more than substance.
